DOHA: Five new driving schools will be opened in the country very soon to cut the long waiting lists of learners at the existing schools.
Already, there are eight driving schools operating in the country with the opening new one the total number of driving schools will reach 13.
“40 percent of the total road accident occurred due to lack of pedestrian crossing facilities like underpasses and bridges,” Brigadier Mohammed Saad Al Kharji, Director of Traffic Department told Al Arab.
“We had taken up the issue about the argent need of pedestrian crossing facilities to Ashghal that is working seriously to launch several projects to build safe pedestrian crossing throughout the country soon, said Al Kharji.
“We have also identified the black spots like Industrial Area that is being upgraded and it is expected to complete soon,” he added.
The Traffic Department will announce the statistics of road accidents 2012 after January because first month of this year will be included in the report in a bid to compare it with January 2012, said Al Kharji.
The causalities of the road accidents soared 270 in 2006, based on this figure the traffic researchers and experts speculated that the death toll of road accident would reach 410. But, despite the growing numbers of the vehicles and population due to influx of foreign workers for the development projects of the country, we proved all speculations false by decreasing the death rate.
Now, the engineering section at the Department is closely monitoring the roadside excavations and black spots. We do not spare any effort to make a smooth traffic flow in collaboration with Faza and Lekhwia. We are satisfied with our achievement and we are capable to reduce the figure of traffic accident to the rate of the advanced countries, he added.
We have installed several radars under experiments to detect the violations of overtaking from right side and there are also new advanced machines to catch the overspreading vehicles, said Al Kharji.
Based on the footage of CC-cameras installed at the signals, the department decides to fine QR6,000 the motorist jumped the red signal by-mistake or any other reasons. But if the Department found that the signal was broken due to reckless driving that might cause to a fatal accident so the violators would be referred to the court by Public Prosecution. And according to the traffic law, the court can fine the motorist from QR10,000 to QR50,000.
We propose to amend the article of the traffic law pertaining to the motorbikes and ban the renting of it and fix the age of riders in a bid to protect people from deadly accidents. Remaining provisions of the law is okay and we are satisfied with it, he added.
