Geneva: The State of Qatar has renewed its firm stance on the unity, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen, stressing its continued support for the brotherly Yemeni people to ensure their protection and the achievement of their aspirations for security, stability, justice, and development, and to preserve the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yemen.
This came in the State of Qatar’s statement delivered by Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs H E Dr. Ahmad Hassan Al Hammadi before the High-Level Pledging Event on the Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen, held in Geneva.
The Secretary-General thanked the governments of Switzerland and Sweden for hosting this conference once again, expressing his appreciation of the efforts made by the United Nations, its programmes and agencies to help the brotherly Yemeni people, alleviate their human suffering, and meet their needs, which are only increasing day by day, noting that Yemen is classified as one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world.
He called on the international community to redouble its efforts to support the Yemeni economy, rebuild basic facilities and infrastructure, continue to support the provision of aid and services, preserve its institutions, and enhance its social cohesion and ability to face crises, such as food insecurity and the spread of diseases.
He expressed the State of Qatar’s appreciation of the armistice sponsored by the United Nations, and its positive impact on the lives of Yemenis from a humanitarian, economic and livelihood aspect, hoping that it turns into a permanent and comprehensive cessation of fighting.
He welcomed the endeavors of the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg, hoping that the political process moves forward and that dialogue, national reconciliation and the political process to form the basis for ending the conflict in Yemen, and to reach a political solution based on the outcomes of national dialogue, the Gulf Cooperation Council Initiative, and relevant Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216.
The Secretary-General affirmed that the State of Qatar has not and will not falter in its humanitarian duties and responsibility in providing numerous types of support and assistance, to alleviate the repercussions of the humanitarian crisis on the brotherly Yemeni people.
He reiterated once again the State of Qatar’s keenness to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations and various humanitarian agencies and organizations, enabling them to address all the challenges and difficulties facing the implementation of their humanitarian programs and activities in Yemen.
He indicated that the Qatar Fund For Development signed an agreement with the World Food Program in November 2021 to provide a financial contribution of $90m to help meet urgent food security needs in Yemen and to avert the threat of famine, pointing out that this contribution has supported more than 7 million Yemenis.
He added that $3m was also contributed to counter the threat posed by the floating oil tanker FSO Safer off the Yemeni coast. Additionally, he continued by saying that the Education Above All Foundation pledged last January to establish 10 mobile schools to support the education of students in Yemen, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration and the Yemen Red Crescent Society.
