DOHA: Nine persons were arrested on charges of altering expiry dates on large stocks of consumer and beauty products.

It is suspected that the Asian and Arab expats were doctoring the expiry dates of the items that included foodstuff, for sale.

The arrests were made from the premises of a private company. Acting on a tip-off, the police caught them red-handed, a news item posted on the website of the Ministry of Interior says.

The police, after being tipped off, confirmed whether the information was authentic.

Once the information was confirmed, the police sought permission from the Public Prosecution to conduct a raid on the premises.

The facility was raided together with inspectors from the Consumer Protection Department (CPD) of the Ministry of Business and Trade, the state-run consumer rights watchdog.

Police recovered huge quantities of expired goods and arrested nine individuals who were printing new expiry dates on

the products.

The goods were to be sold to shopping centres.

The police also seized several stamps and other equipment being used to print new expiry dates on the products.
