DOHA: On an average 1,000 new patients are treated for heart attack at the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Heart Hospital each year.

Among them 55 percent patients are under 50 years of age and of these 30 percent are under the age of 40 years, according to the HMC.

In 2012 alone 10,500 patients were seen at the Heart Hospital for cardiovascular diseases.  At least 3,000 of them needed surgical treatment.

“Many people who come to the hospital because of a heart attack has not got treatment for cardiovascular diseases,” said Dr Khalid Abdulnoor Saifeldeen, Director at Hamad International Training Centre, speaking to journalists yesterday about the second phase of the Kulluna safety campaign.

“We can’t do anything about age and genetic reasons which cause heart diseases but habits like smoking and lifestyle risks can be avoided,” he added.

He also advised that people should do routine scanning for cardiovascular diseases at least once a year.

To educate people about prevention and risk of cardiovascular diseases, the campaign ‘Kulluna for a Healthy Heart’ will take place by end of this month. It will provide advice, health checks and tests for those concerned about their hearts.
