DOHA: In a novel initiative to promote cardiac health Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) will set up a polyclinic at the City Center shopping mall by the end of this month. It will provide advice, health checks and tests for cardiovascular diseases.

People at a risk of developing cardiovascular diseases will be directed to the HMC for further treatment.

The polyclinic will be set as part of the ‘Kulluna for a Healthy Heart’ campaign aimed at promoting cardiac health and combating heart disease in the country.

The campaign focuses on several different methods of prevention of heart diseases and educates people on behaviours, lifestyle and risk factors such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes that can lead to cardiovascular illnesses.

The polyclinic will be initially for two weeks providing tests like blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels. Visitors can get echocardiography and ECG tests at specially dedicated rooms.

Over 50 physicians, nurses and technicians will be working at the polyclinic.

“A polyclinic will be set up at the City Center before end of May and it will be there for at least two weeks. This period would get extended,” said Dr Khalid Abdulnoor Saifeldeen, Director, Hamad International Training Centre speaking to journalists yesterday about the second phase of the Kulluna safety campaign.

“Right information and right advice will be given by the right people at the polyclinic and the campaign will aim to prevent cardiovascular diseases and guide patients with the illness,” he said.

The polyclinic will also have several other unique facilities for the public.

Dieticians at the nutrition centre will advise people on healthy diet and importance of exercise and a demonstration will be given by cardiac rehabilitation centre experts.

The clinic will also give advice and support to people to quit smoking. It will check the carbon monoxide percentage in the smokers’ lungs and their Body Mass Index (BMI) before assessing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The Peninsula
