Doha: The Police Training Centre (PTI) from the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has tied up with the GCC Criminal Information Centre to Combat Drugs (GCC-CICCD) to collaborate in research on substance abuse, the Ministry said in a release yesterday.

A Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed by PTI Director Brigadier Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al Marri and CICCD Director Brigadier Saqr Rashid Al Mraikhi.

Brig Al Mraikhi said that drug is one of the most dangerous issues that can destroy human societies and the younger generations, which leads to social disintegration and disruption of national security and order.

“Given those circumstances, developments and changes witnessed by the world in general and the Gulf region in particular, GCC member states were urged to make more efforts and take all appropriate legal and security measures to meet those variables regionally and internationally, through the promotion of joint efforts and international cooperation to address the issue,” Brig Al Mraikhi said.

Both sides agreed on the preparation, implementation and exchange of research and joint studies on combatting illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, exchange of visiting experts and researchers in the field, invitations to participate in scientific activities, conferences, seminars, workshops and training courses organised by any of the parties in areas referred in the LOI.

The Research and Studies Section of PTI yesterday also concluded a two-day workshop on the implementation of the recommendations of the symposium on security culture and its role in the development of society.

Thirteen different departments of MoI participated in the workshop. Issues such drug awareness, traffic, human rights and human trafficking and community policing, naval safety, civil protection and safety as well as safe use of Internet were discussed.
