DOHA: The State Cabinet yesterday called for amending some key provisions of the labour law to help implement the wage protection system (WPS) whereby all workers in the country would be paid salaries through banks.
The Cabinet, at its weekly meeting, recommended that Articles 1, 66 and 145 of the Labour Law (No. 4 of 2004) be altered to put in place the electronic wage payment system.
Article 66 of the Labour Law, for instance, provides that employees could be paid in cash and in person.
The salaries of some employees could be transferred to their bank accounts with mutual consent, says the Article. The Cabinet yesterday approved the recommendations of a committee that has been formed to study the WPS. The system, it is learnt, is to be implemented in three stages beginning with major companies.
The Cabinet meeting was chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud. Many other issues were on the agenda of the meet. The Peninsula
