DOHA: Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) held a training session for private sector stakeholders to shed light on the tourism industry’s latest trends and best practices in sustainability for organising business events, including meetings, exhibitions, seminars and conferences .
The latest training programme was part of QTA’s continuing efforts to develop Qatar’s ability to attract and host world-class business events in the country.
The session, titled ‘Sustainability in the Events Industry: The Why, the What, and the How’, was held at Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) and attracted over 50 key members of Qatar’s Business Events industry. Lindsay Arell, Director of Sustainability Services at BPA’s iCompli Sustainability, an expert on the subject of sustainability in the hospitality industry, led the session.
“While the nation’s leadership has designated tourism a priority sector in the country’s efforts to diversify the economy, it is our duty at QTA to ensure that this development is carried out in a sustainable manner,” said Ahmed Al Obaidli, QTA’s Acting Director of Exhibitions. “Sessions such as this one are designed to give our partners in the private sector the tools to create a sustainable Business Events industry for a sustainable economy.”
“Qatar’s world-class venues, including DECC and Qatar National Convention Centre, are witnessing constant activity. These represent a multitude of sectors, from real estate and construction, with events such as the 7th edition of Cityscape Qatar and Project Qatar, to global healthcare and research with the World Innovation Summit for Health,” he added. “It is critical to ensure that the growth which Qatar’s business events sector is experiencing is consistent and sustainable.”
Qatar has witnessed a substantial increase in activity in the business meetings and exhibitions sector, with over 80 conferences and exhibitions confirmed to take place this year.
QTA’s strategy to increase the number of visitors to Qatar by 20 percent over the next five years places strong emphasis on business events as a priority sector in achieving this growth.
“This is my first visit to the Gulf region and, even before arriving, reading the vision and strategy for Qatar’s tourism sector made a great impression on me,” added Arell. “The focus on sustainability in generating economic growth and ensuring the wellbeing of Qatar’s residents and visitors is very pronounced. I have worked with a lot of destinations around the world but this commitment is unique, especially in the emphasis on innovation and the industry’s overall desire to have more sustainable practices.”
A key pillar of the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy 2030 (QNTSS) is empowering the private sector to attract and host global events, through providing professional training programs and access to the highest quality of expertise in the field.
