Doha, Qatar: The Qatari Forum for Authors hosted Qatari critic and media writer Dr. Hassan Rasheed to discuss the reality of theatre in Qatar.
Moderated by Director General of the Forum, Dr. Aisha Jassim Al Kuwari, the session highlighted the reality of theatre in Qatar and addressed the writer’s career including his most important innovative stations and beginnings in the fields of media, writing and theatrical criticism.
The theatre has witnessed deceleration in its activities in the recent years because drama and cinema have been controlling the scene owing to the weak financial income earmarked for theatrical works, while theatre itself is interconnected with the compassion for stage, Dr. Rasheed said, adding that actors simultaneously obtain wages from the spectator’s reaction, citing some theater actors who are highly associated with the theatre.
He pointed to the high cost of stage shows due to the requirements of the current era, cutting-edge technologies and disappearance of sports club’s theatres and youth theatres which previously played an influential role, as Qatari theatre actors won global awards starting from Sharjah to Italy, Algeria, and Morocco. Dr. Hassan Rasheed underscored the importance of criticism in guiding the theatre and drama movement, regretting that criticism is no longer being accepted, along with the disappearance of fields that care for theatre.
