Doha, Qatar: Fashion designer Rayan Alami, founder of Authentic Roz, showcased his culturally inspired contemporary designs at Fashion Art Toronto as part of the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Years of Culture initiative, highlighting the growing global presence of regional creativity through fashion and cultural exchange.

Participating through the M7 delegation, Alami sees the platform as an opportunity to present a contemporary vision of Middle Eastern fashion that bridges heritage and modernity while engaging international audiences in conversations around identity, design and culture.

Speaking to The Peninsula, Alami said his participation reflects the ethos behind Authentic Roz, a fashion brand rooted in cultural storytelling and shaped by experiences across different regions and traditions.

“Authentic Roz comes from my own background, from growing up between different cultures and trying to understand where I fit within all of them,” he said.

The designer described his aesthetic as emerging from what he calls an “in-between space,” blending heritage, emotion and modernity to create garments that feel elegant yet deeply personal. Through strong silhouettes, layered textures and earthy tones, Alami aims to reinterpret cultural influences in a contemporary and globally relevant way.

For Alami, presenting at Fashion Art Toronto under the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Years of Culture initiative reinforces a larger dialogue between cultures, where fashion becomes a tool for creative exchange.

“Opportunities such as the Qatar, Canada and Mexico 2026 Years of Culture initiative, and being part of the M7 delegation presenting at Fashion Art Toronto, are important in building international bridges because they allow emerging designers from the region to enter new cultural and creative markets through meaningful exchange,” he said.

The participation comes as part of broader efforts to spotlight Qatari and regional creative talent internationally, offering designers an avenue to present their perspectives while remaining rooted in local identity.

Alami explained that his work draws inspiration from Middle Eastern traditions of elegance, layering, dignity and restraint, though he deliberately avoids literal interpretations of cultural references.

“With Authentic Roz, I try to take that feeling and translate it into something modern,” he said, adding that the goal is to create garments that feel “rooted, but not stuck in the past.”

He noted that Qatar’s understated elegance, diplomacy and traditional values continue to shape the brand’s creative identity, while influences from Europe and Morocco contribute additional layers through craftsmanship, architecture, colour and cultural atmosphere.

The designer’s creative process begins with emotion rather than construction, often inspired by memory, place, colour or a personal experience before evolving into wearable pieces.

“I first try to understand the world around a piece, what emotion it carries, what story it belongs to and how I want someone to feel when they wear it,” he said.

Sustainability also remains central to the brand’s philosophy. Authentic Roz uses organic cotton alongside deadstock wool and leather sourced from major fashion houses, repurposing existing materials to reduce waste while maintaining quality.

Small production runs and made-to-order models further support the brand’s commitment to conscious fashion and longevity.

Looking ahead, Alami said he hopes Authentic Roz evolves into a globally recognised contemporary luxury brand spanning Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America while remaining anchored in cultural identity.

For the designer, Fashion Art Toronto represents more than an international showcase, it is an opportunity to tell stories through fashion and demonstrate how regional creativity can resonate across borders through meaningful cultural exchange.
