Workers catching a stray dog in Doha yesterday.
DOHA: The Ministry of Environment has commenced a drive to catch stray dogs and cats.
The drive aims to protect the environment and public health and to minimise the chances of health hazards due to the surge of the stray animal population in the streets.
The decision was taken to achieve international level as per directives of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (ASPA).
Qatar has been divided into several zones and a team has been assigned to each area.
The stray animals are being registered and are caught for mercy killings or they will be sterilised and taken to safe shelters away from residential areas, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported yesterday.
