New York: Qatar has announced $500m contribution for financing development projects in Yemen.
In a statement during the 4th meeting of the Friends of Yemen held on the sidelines of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, H E Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah said that Qatar has started to prepare a programme for stability and development in Yemen and allocated $500m in grants and loans to fund development programmes.
“By contributing to this development programme, Qatar seeks to achieve sustainable development and security in Yemen while supporting the aspirations of the Yemeni people for development and decent life,” Dr Al Attiyah said.
He pointed out that Qatar has started the implementation of these development projects after studying the needs and priorities of the various Yemeni provinces.
In this context, Dr. Al Attiyah reviewed the “unprecedented” economic, political, security and humanitarian challenges facing the Yemeni people, stressing that security, stability and development of Yemen are international responsibilities and their repercussions for international security justify international obligations to meet sustainable development in Yemen.
Dr Al Attiyah stressed the importance of bilateral relations between Qatar and Yemen, pointing out that Qatar continues to support development efforts and meeting the humanitarian needs of Yemeni people.
$15m Gaza Hospital
Qatar and the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) yesterday to fund establishment of a prosthetics hospital.
The head of the Qatari delegation to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, Ambassador Mohammed Al Emadi said an international advisory office in Qatar has finished preparing designs for the establishment of the Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Hospital , which will be established in west of Gaza, to be funded by Qatar at a cost of $15m.
Emadi said during the signing ceremony of the memorandum that the hospital will contain a centre for the deaf and dumb rehabilitation as well as the prosthetics rehabilitation .
For his part, Minister of Health of the sacked Palestinian government Mufid Almakhllaty said the establishement of this hospital is a good step on the road to the reconstruction of Gaza and the advancement of the Palestinian health sector.QNA
