DOHA: Qatar Foundation for Elderly People Care is preparing to conduct a survey to find detailed information about the elderly people of the country, an Arabic daily reported yesterday.

The survey will be conducted together with Qatar Statistics Authority to collect information and store as digital data. Findings of this field study are expected to be published for public, said Mubarak Al Khalifa, Director General Qatar Foundation for Elderly Care.

He further explained that according to the Statistics Authority, there are 28,000 Qatari elders. Qatar Foundation for Elderly People Care is also planning to issue them with special identity cards by 2013, which will benefit them to facilities at commercial complexes and government institutions. The foundation is also taking steps to reorganise the institution and change the impression people have about the organisation.

“Many people think that we are like a hospital. We need to change this impression,” said Al Khalifa. Qatar Foundation for Elderly Care will today launch its new logo and also soon shift to new building.

The foundation is planning to have hotline to receive calls from elders who face problems and who are ill-treated.  Al Khalifa also said that the foundation is prepared to receive funds and support from genuine contributors.

Qatar Foundation for Elderly will soon expand its services and create more awareness about taking care of elders. The foundation is presently providing health care, physiotherapy and nursing aid for elderly people. The foundation functions as a day care centre for elders between 8am and 2pm. It also aims to create awareness among families about how to take care of the elders together with the Hamad Medical Cooperation.
