DOHA: Qatar will have about 4,500 taxis on the road by 2016, public transport company Mowasalat has said.

The company plans to add 1,000 taxis each in the next two years to the current fleet of 2,500 cabs in the country.

Of the existing fleet, about 50 percent are operated by two private companies, Al Million and Al Ijarah Holding.

Meanwhile, Mowasalat in collaboration with the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) will organise the UITP MENA Public Transport and Large Events workshop at the Al Mirqab hotel in Souq Waqif.

Khaled Al Hail, Mowasalat’s CEO said the workshop was part of efforts to develop a well-defined public transport network in Qatar. The tone was set last year and the work is in progress to establish a strategy and action plan integrating with stakeholders to evolve for the future, he added.
