DOHA: The 2013 Qatar National Robot Olympiad will kick off today at the Doha Exhibition Centre featuring 200 teams and 500 students who will compete in a range of demanding challenges using LEGO Mindstorms robots.
The two-day Olympiad forms part of the GO ROBOT programme that aims to build interest among students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Since April more than 300 teachers have attended intensive robotics training sessions at the College of North Atlantic Qatar (CNA-Q) and hundreds of robotics kits have been donated to schools across Qatar.
Hundreds of spectators are expected to attend the event which is open to the public. It is sponsored by Maersk Oil Qatar, supported by CNA-Q under the patronage of the Supreme Education Council and with the support of Qatar Petroleum.
Sheikh Faisal Al Thani, Deputy Managing Director of Maersk Oil Qatar, said: “The National Robot Olympiad is a natural fit for Maersk Oil Qatar as the students are faced with complex challenges in building a robot.”
The winners of the National Robot Olympiad will represent Qatar at the World Robot Finals in Jakarta later this year.
