Doha: Qatar has welcomed the historic resolution the UN General Assembly has adopted early yesterday when it voted overwhelmingly to grant and upgrade Palestine’s request to a non-member observer state as a highly significant step on the way for restoring the Palestinian rights and a victory to the international law and international legitimacy.

A statement released by a Foreign Ministry official lauded the brave steps taken by those  countries which supported the Palestinian bid and called upon the countries who voted against to reconsider their stand.

The official source of the ministry  voiced hope the UN Security Council would consider positively to Palestine’s request to attain  the full-fledged membership according to the international legitimacy resolutions.

The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to make Palestine a non-member state, inflicting a major diplomatic defeat on the United States and Israel.

The victory for president Mahmoud Abbas triggered scenes of joy in the occupied West Bank where thousands celebrated with bursts of gunfire and cheers in the city of Ramallah.
