PARIS: Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, has met with Unesco Director-General Irina Bokova, Director of the World Heritage Centre Kishore Rao and a number of Unesco senior officials.
These meetings were held during Sheikha Mayassa’s visit to the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in Paris.
Sheikha Mayassa’s visit comes within the framework of intensive preparations for Qatar hosting the 38th session of the World Heritage Committee from June 16 to 25 next year in Doha. The meeting of the World Heritage Committee is the most important annual meeting to be held by Unesco, besides the General Assembly, where representatives of 21 countries will meet to study proposals for countries wishing to be included in the World Heritage List.
The Qatari delegation included Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of QMA, Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed Al Thani, and the Permanent Representative of Qatar to Unesco, Ali Zainal.
Qatar won the membership of the Unesco World Heritage Committee in November 2011, and the city of Al Zubarah was included in the World Heritage List in June this year, as a first inclusion and recognition of a Qatari archaeological site in an international registry, which classifies Al Zubarah as one of the 911 most important heritage and natural sites listed globally.
