Amwaj Blue Stars won the sixth annual Total Halul football tournament, beating Svitzer Al Dana 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out after the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of extra time.
The Halul football tournament, started in 2006 by Total E&P Qatar, is one of the major year-end events on Halul island. It provides residents of Halul with a refreshing change from their daily activities and combines the best aspects of sports and entertainment.
This year’s tournament had 10 teams vying for the title. Total’s team, TEPQ Golden Stars, one of the tournament favourites, showed promise in the early stages, entering the semifinals with three wins and a loss. However, its championship dream ended with a semifinal loss to Svitzer Al Dana. Philippe Labattu of TEPQ Golden Stars, who scored six goals, was the best striker of the team, and the fourth best of the tournament. The top three scorers were Parabin Katwal of Amwaj Blue Stars, and Abdulla and Nirmal Sundharan of Svitzer Al Dana, with 12, nine and eight goals, respectively.
More than 800 spectators watched the semifinals and the final.
The final was played in the presence of Halul Operations Superintendent Khalifa Al Malki and members of the QP management. A lottery was held during the closing ceremony, with the winners receiving two five-gram gold bars and various other prizes.
