DOHA: Over 500 people participated in Aspire Zone’s second annual Aquathon, which was designed for the community to improve fitness levels.

After its five-month run, the Aquathon ended with the fifth and final race. Overall winners were decided on a best three out of five races basis.

“I competed in all five of the races and enjoyed each and every one of them. They’re fantastic; really well organised and a great inspiration to get people out and doing exercise,” said Tom Whateley, series winner for open men.

He added: “The facilities are incredible. The opportunity to swim in an Olympic pool and run around a beautiful park... It just doesn’t get better than this in Qatar. I will definitely take part again next year.”

Rebecca Grace, series winner for open women, said: “I competed in three races as I’ve only just arrived in Doha. For me, someone who is new to the region, the Aquathon is a fantastic way to meet and connect with other athletes. And it’s a great way to add some fun to your training.”

The second series saw a dramatic increase in the number of competitors, with the introduction of junior events which were particularly popular.

The series included three routes: The adult race consisted of a 500m swim and a 5km run; the 12-13-year category featured a 200m swim and 3km run and the 10-11-year category comprised a 100m swim and 1.5km run.

The Aquathon is organised by Aspire Logistics.

It is designed to help improve one’s cardiovascular fitness, as well as their overall health.

The overall aim of the annual event is to support Aspire Zone’s vision to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
