DOHA: A series of free Islamic Arts workshops facilitated by The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, which specialises in teaching, research and promoting the practice and theory of the arts and crafts of the world’s great traditions, will kickoff at Katara Cultural Village tomorrow as part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture.
Participants will be inspired by the art and architecture of the Islamic world, learning the principles of design behind their beauty.
They will then apply these principles in a painted composition of their own making — a greeting card, miniature painting, or illuminated design, for example.
Participants are welcome to return for multiple workshops; different patterns will be taught in each of the geometry and Islimi sessions.
An introduction to the language of symmetry in Islamic art is a practical workshop looking at how to construct some classical patterns from across the Islamic world with the traditional tools of compass and ruler.
Students will have the opportunity to add colour to their designs and contribute to a group project to be exhibited towards the end of the two-week workshop series.
An introduction to the geometry of structure is another practical workshop, where participants will study the relationship between the Platonic Solids and classical Islamic patterns.
Students will build linear and planar models and explore how patterns behave in three dimensional space.
A family drop-in workshop for all ages, will explore the integration of floral and geometric motifs to create beautiful patterns in two and three dimensions.
The techniques will include geometric drawing, painting, stencilling, tessellation and three- dimensional model building.
The Islimi practical workshop will allow students to learn to draw traditional Islimi (floral) motifs free-hand.
These will then be reflected and tessellated to create a larger rosette which will be integrated with a classical geometric design.
