Sharq Village and Spa will host its open water swimming challenge for a cause on March 17, an official associated with the event said yesterday.
‘Swim for a Cause’ event will be held in collaboration with Qatar Charity, H2O swim club, Six Senses Spa, MAD triathlon and Tri Club Doha at the Sharq Village & Spa beach.
“By hosting such events we hope to raise awareness of providing safe and clean drinking water for the needy in developing countries,” said Sharq Village & Spa Recreation Manager Asela Jayaweera.
The event, which is expected to attract a large number of swimming enthusiasts, hopes to impart valuable water safety education tips to both children and parents.
“Our aim is also to promote a healthy life style among the residents of Qatar. Sharq Village & Spa takes part also in Water safety program for kids in order to minimize drowning incidents in Qatar. The program involves water safety education,” said Jayaweera.
Swimming experts also will explain ways on how to react during an emergency and to raise awareness among parents about safe swimming. There will be three contests – one for children and the remaining two contests, for both men and women, in open category. Participants may choose to swim a distance of 250m, 500m or 1000m. The first contest is for between the age of 8 to 11.
This month’s event will be the first one of the three challenges the organizers plan to host this year. The next two races will be held on April 29 and May 6. Parents and swim trainers also took part in the race while others came to support their children, who were contesting in the races. The age of the participants varied and we're delighted to say the youngest participant was aged seven," commented Jayaweera.
