To protect turtle nesting places, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has announced the closure of Fuwairit Beach until August 1. The Ministry aims to save endangered turtles and sea birds and has asked people to cooperate to make the nesting season successful.
The nesting sites at Fuwairit Beach have been fenced completely during the nesting. It also provides the opportunity to study its behaviour and the environmental effects on it.
To make the nesting season successful, the Ministry controls vehicles entering the area, to prevent turtle nests being affected.
The Ministry said that some careless people affect the nesting with loud noises, lighting and vehicle traffic.
It also asked people to report violations committed by people against the turtles on the number 998.
One female turtle lays about 70 to 95 eggs in the nest leaving it without any care for a period of 52 to 62 days.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment has said that the nesting season of turtles last year was successful. The nesting percentage was high on the islands and northern coasts of the country.
