District schools await repairs

PESHAWAR: Several schools destroyed in acts of terrorism in Pakistan’s northwestern district of Kohat district are yet to be rebuilt. It has affected education of students, but there is no sense of urgency among government officials to repair and rebuild the destroyed schools.
A survey by Kohat journalist Rashid Ishaq showed that the destroyed premises included Government Primary School Shahpur, Government Girls Primary School Teerawal Banda, Government Primary School Babri Banda, Government Primary School Kotterri, Government Middle School Kot and Government Primary Girls School Ghulam Banda.
The Government Primary School Babri Banda was partially damaged in a car bomb blast targeting the Bilitang Police Station on April 18, 2010. Seven rooms of the school located close to the police station were damaged.
Govt resolves passports delay 
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Director General Passports Zulfikar Cheema yesterday said the problem of delay in issuance of green passports has been resolved after the provision of lamination paper.
According to report, he said the work related to preparing passports has been streamlined. He demanded an investigation into stoppage of the supply of lamination paper.
Cheema said about 20,000 passports are being issued daily. He said the backlog would be cleared in next month.
He said the people who applied for ordinary passports to perform Hajj would also be able to get their passports next month.  
Student attends global contest
ISLAMABAD: Seventeen-year-old Muhammad Ahsan Nawaz isn’t one to let a few hurdles slow him down.
He struggled with school, dropped out for four years, and still made it to the list of finalists at the world’s largest pre-college science competition.
Nawaz was one of 10 Pakistani students selected for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in the American city of Phoenix, from May 12 to May 17. The event brings together research of 1,600 teenage scientists from 70 countries, territories and regions.
