DOHA: The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), yesterday launched its Qatar branch with an aim to support the country in raising safety standards at work sites.
The Qatar branch of the only chartered body for health and safety professionals in the world, hopes to make a difference by bringing together professionals and organisations in the country to help improve road traffic, fire and construction safety, while promoting the country’s 2030 vision.
“We want to make health and safety a part in everyday life in Qatar and feel we can really make a difference by working with organisations and holding learning events that are relevant to the economic climate and culture. We will also look to contribute to the safe and healthy build and planning of the 2022 World Cup, in Qatar, by offering guidance on construction safety and sports events planning,” said Subash Ludhra, President of IOSH, speaking at the Qatar branch inauguration held at W Hotel.
As the biggest health and safety membership organisation in the world, the IOSH is committed to creating a world of work which is safe, healthy and sustainable. It is the first European safety body to be awarded NGO status by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
IOSH sets standards, and support, develop and connect members with resources, guidance, events and training. It has more than 40,000 members in 85 countries. IOSH already has developed strong links with Texas A&M University, in Qatar, and is now looking to build links with schools, with institutions such as the Supreme Council of Health (SCH), Ministry of Interior, companies and other bodies to share best practice and help improve risk education.
