New York: The State of Qatar has pledged an amount of $20m as contribution to the UN Humanitarian Pooled Fund, based in Turkey.
An agreement was reached at the UN headquarters here and was signed for the Qatari side by the Director of the International Development Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Muraikhi and for the UN side by UN Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos. In a statement issued by her office, Amos said that Qatar’s contribution of $20m to the Humanitarian Fund will enable the UN and its partners to help those in need in the hard-to-reach areas inside Syria.
She explained that the Fund will provide financial support to shelter operations, health and food. Amos added the Fund will also help to maintain the vital aid operations of humanitarian agencies across borders.
Some 11 million people urgently need assistance in Syria, and more than 4.7 million of them are in areas which aid agencies can only reach by bringing relief supplies across borders, Amos said.
