Doha: The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs yesterday issued a statement reminding Muslims of fasting on the day of Ashurah, the 10th day of Muharram, in pursuance of the Sunna (sayings and deeds) of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
The statement said it is advisable to fast on this day.
Although Muharram is a sanctified month as a whole, the 10th day of Muharram, called Ashurah, is the most sacred of all its days. According to the Holy Companion Ibn Abbas, when the Prophet migrated to Madinah, he found that the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram. They said that it was the day on which Prophet Musa and his followers crossed the Red Sea miraculously and the pharaoh was drowned in its waters. On hearing this, the Prophet said, “We are more closely related to Musa than you,” and directed Muslims to fast on the day of Ashura.
