Cairo: The Arab League has underscored the importance of 24th session of Arab summit scheduled to be held in Doha at the end of this month.
Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab League Ambassador Ahmed Ben Helli, in a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), said the Doha summit would focus on reform and development of joint Arab action, and will discuss efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and the developments of the Palestinian cause, as well as the development and restructuring of the Arab League.
Ben Helli’s remarks came before the departure of an Arab League delegation headed by its Secretary-General Dr Nabil El Araby from Cairo to Doha to discuss the arrangements to convene the Arab summit.
He added that the Arab League General Secretariat will move its meetings to Doha from March 22 to prepare for the summit which will be held on March 27 and 28. The outcome of these meetings will be referred to Arab leaders.
Dr El Araby will present at the summit a detailed report prepared by the Arab League Development Committee Chaired by Lakhdar Brahimi.
Ben Helli said that the Doha summit will see proposals put forward by Libya, Somalia and Palestine, and that Iraq will report on its presidency of the Arab summit.
Ben Helli stressed on the importance Arab Ministerial Meeting that will be held next Wednesday to discuss the 139th session of the Arab League Council to be convened later. The meeting will particularly discuss the agenda of the 139th session, in terms of political, economic and social issues. It will also deal with the schedule of the Arab Summit in Doha, Ben Helli added.
On the Syrian crisis, he said that it was the top priority of all Arab League-related meetings as the council pushes for a political solution. He confirmed that Arab ministers meeting will present their proposals on Syria to the Arab Summit in Doha, and will also discuss the outcomes of the Friends of Syria Conference in Rome. They will discuss Syrian conflict, the Palestinian cause and the situation in Somalia.
