Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has launched a series of awareness activities in celebration of the World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ at Qatar Mall from June 1- 3.

In a statement yesterday, the Ministry explained that the events aim to raise environmental awareness among all segments of society and to highlight the dangers of plastic pollution and its negative impacts on both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The initiative features educational and interactive activities that combine learning with entertainment.

These events include several awareness corners: ‘Land Corner’, showcasing the effects of plastic pollution on terrestrial environments; ‘Sea Corner’, highlighting the harmful impact of plastics on marine life; ‘Knowledge Garden’, providing scientific information on types of plastics and their effects on the environment and health; and ‘Photography Corner’, offering an interactive experience to encourage positive environmental behaviour.

As part of integrating art with environmental awareness, students from the Department of Art Education at Qatar University are presenting artworks depicting the effects of plastic pollution, under academic supervision, an initiative designed to convey environmental messages through artistic creativity.

The event also features a children’s play titled “Our Beautiful Environment”, performed three times daily on the first and second days. The play targets children and families, using a simple and engaging format to deliver key environmental messages.

In this context, Director of the Public Relations and Communication Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Farhoud Al Hajri emphasized that these activities are part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to enhance environmental awareness. He stressed the importance of involving all segments of society in protecting the environment and reducing the use of single-use plastics.
