Doha, Qatar: With new head coach Julen Lopetegui at the helm, Qatar are intensifying their preparations in Doha ahead of a crucial clash against Iran in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Qatar will host Iran on Thursday at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium before traveling to Tashkent to face Uzbekistan on June 10 in what will be their final match of the third round of Asian qualifiers for the World Cup.

Having missed out on automatic qualification from Group A, the Asian champions are now aiming to advance to the next stage of qualifying in their bid to reach the World Cup for the first time through competition, after making their debut as hosts in 2022.

With 20 points, Iran have already qualified for the World Cup while Uzbekistan – on 17 points – are strong contenders to seal the second automatic spot.

The UAE, who have 13 points, remain in the hunt as well.

Qatar currently sit fourth in the group with 10 points – four points ahead of Kyrgyzstan – who are also vying for a place in the fourth round.

This next stage will feature the third- and fourth-placed teams from each of the three third-round groups, battling for the World Cup berths reserved for group winners only.

Spaniard Lopetegui, who replaced compatriot Luis Garcia, said in a recent show on Alkass television that his full focus is on the two crucial matches this month.

He named a full-strength squad for the fixtures with Almoez Ali and Akram Afif leading the frontline.

“We have a very balanced squad with players of different playing styles. We have to be able to work with them and build the energy around the group ahead of these matches. While not easy, a win against Iran is still possible,” said Lopetegui, a former Spain and Real Madrid coach.

“We are committed to giving our best against Iran and Uzbekistan. Our aim is to reach the play-offs.”

Qatar have been holding training sessions at the Khalifa International Stadium since announcing the 28-man squad last week.

Meanwhile, Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei announced his 28-man squad on Sunday, which includes prolific Inter Milan striker Mehdi Taremi.

Following their meeting with Qatar, Iran will face North Korea in their final match in Tehran on June 10. North Korea are already out of the qualifying race having earned just two points so far.
