DOHA: Qatar continued their good show on the third day, emerged winners in the U-17 age-group with seven gold, six silver and one bronze in the 12th GCC Gymnastics Championships at the Al Khawla bint Al Azwar Indoor Hall yesterday.
For the hosts, the pack of the gold came from Ahmed Nabeel, who claimed six gold and one silver.
“I’m really happy to win seven medals. It’s one of the best moments in my career,” said Nabeel.
It was an outstanding evening for the youngster, who brooked no challenge from Saudi Arabia and Bahrain opponents in the rings, individual all-around, floor, vault and high bars while silver came in pommel horse event, which was won by compatriot Abdullah Al Hareth.
“It was quite a determined show by Nabeel. We’re really happy for him as well as for other gymnasts. We hope to do well in the seniors tomorrow,” said Qatar Gymnastics Federation President Ali Ahmed Al Hitmi.
The hosts won the team final with 209.800 points while Saudi (182.950) bagged the silver and Bahrain (95.600) claimed the bronze.
At the other end, Saudi failed keep up their momentum after winning the U-14 team title on Thursday. As the hosts mounted an increased pressure on them, they could manage seven bronze and a silver medal.
