Expat bodies to help create traffic awareness

DOHA: The traffic department is roping in the various expatriate communities to help raise public awareness about road safety in the country which has a high road accident rate.

The department will be training representatives from expatriate organisations that are registered with the embassies of their respective countries on key aspects of road safety.

Those trained will be expected to raise awareness in their respective communities about road safety, a press statement issued by the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Interior said yesterday. The traffic department, in association with public relations department, will be conducting a series of (free) training courses for expatriate community representatives.

The training programme will start from the middle of this month and will cover various subjects related to traffic safety. The four-hour training session led by traffic safety experts will be held over weekends from 4.30 pm at the conference hall of the headquarters of the Traffic Department in Madinah Khalifa district. 

The training session in English, aims at training a representative of each community organisation and in the future, this representative will be carrying out traffic awareness programmes among the members of his community in coordination with Public Relations and Traffic Departments of the Ministry. 

The training session will cover various subjects related to traffic safety such as pedestrian accidents: reasons and remedies, common traffic issues such as not moving the vehicle to the nearest parking area in case of minor accidents, negligence to seatbelts while driving, impact of using mobile phone and texting while driving, opposite driving and its fine, overtaking from the right side, power of collision between two vehicles and the traffic law implemented in Qatar in 2007 along with fines for violators and black point system. The course will make the trainees capable to conduct training programs in the community programmes.
