Doha: The Museum of Islamic Art in conjunction with Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra is organising Syrian Passport, a free concert in the museum’s atrium on Thursday, at 6pm. MAqam Ensemble, a group of musicians drawn from the Philharmonic led by co-principal second violinist MAias Alyamani, will perform a selection of pieces with its contemporary take on Arabic musical idioms.
The concert is the first of a recurring series of Qatar Philharmonic musicians in chamber music at the museum. Museum of Islamic Art visitors are able to both browse the galleries and enjoy MAqam’s music. The programme of music includes works by MAias Alyamani, Yamen Alyamani, Hazem Alaani, Aziz Ghannam, Firas Hassan, and Basel Rajoob.
MAqam is an ensemble that specialises in performing Middle-eastern and Arabic music with a modern, structured by accessible approach, all the while preserving the spirit and character of the original music. The group was established by Syrian MAias Alyamani in Vienna in 2006. Its five young musicians (four strings and percussion) come from the Arab world and share the highest level of musical education as well as a special talent and passion for their work. Recent concerts have taken them to musical capitals in South America and Russia in addition to Europe and Mena.
