Doha: The Assistant Foreign Minister for International Cooperation Affairs H E Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohamed bin Jabor Al Thani yesterday said Qatar is working with civil society institutions to safeguard human rights of everyone.
“Qatar is working in full swing to guarantee human rights to everyone who enters the country, whether as citizen, resident or passer-by,” Sheikh Ahmed told the 18th Asia Pacific Forum (APC) annual conference yesterday.
He said the government is actively working to improve labour conditions and achieve international standards that guarantee rights, which would also benefit the country in its development.
He announced an annual $50,000 support to the forum in its effort to protect human rights in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Chairman of Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee, Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri, said partnership between the government and civil society was necessary to resolve human rights challenges.
The new reality in the Arab world requires a closer look to avoid the high cost people bear for their security, integrity and stability. He said authorities needed to agree on a mechanism to resolve human rights issues.
Speaking at one of the discussions during the conference, Sushil Pyakurel from Nepal’s Alliance for Social Dialogue said he was confident that Qatar will take steps to protect labourers in the country.
“Some people in Nepal are depressed about reports on Nepali workers in Qatar. We think the Nepalese and labourers from other countries are contributing to Qatar’s development and that the human rights committee is taking the issue seriously,” he added.
