ISLAMABAD: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, majority (65 percent) is fearful and apprehensive about insurgency in Balochistan.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked ‘These days in Balochistan there are discussions going on about separatist movements and insurgency. In your opinion, is the threat of separation and insurgency from Balochistan very serious or not serious?’
Responding to this, 65 percent of Pakistanis are of the opinion that the threat is ‘very serious’ and 16 percent think it is ‘not serious’. However, 19 per cent chose no response.
The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International.
The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2674men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during October 07, 2012 - October 13, 2012. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 percent at 95 percent confidence level.
According to another survey by the same institution, Pakistani views on who is to blame for insurgency in Balochistan are sharply divided: federal government (27 percent), Baloch leaders (29 percent) and foreign powers (27 percent) all share it almost equally.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked ‘In your opinion, who is more responsible for the unrest in Balochistan and negative sentiments about central government?’ Responding to this, 29 percent said ‘Baloch leaders’, 27 percent said ‘federal government’ and 27 percent said ‘foreign powers.’
However, 17 percent did not give a response.
