DOHA: Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Heart Hospital observed World Ether Day to commemorate the 168th anniversary of the use of ether anaesthesia for pain-free surgeries.
Dr Abdul Rasheed Pattath, Head, Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia at the hospital, said around 200 participants, including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and intensive care unit staff took part in a scientific symposium as part of activities to mark the day.
He explained the relevance of anaesthesia and its positive impact on medicine in general, especially in performing more complex surgical operations such as open heart surgeries, brain and neuro-surgeries, which were not possible prior to the discovery of anaesthesia.
Anaesthesia is being used before and after surgeries in intensive care units and its use has reduced mortality rate post-surgeries.
Dr Pattath said the progress seen in ether anaesthesia has assisted in cardiology robotic surgeries in Qatar and that some 29 operations had been performed at Heart Hospital using ether anaesthesia.
