Joint statement between Qatar and ILO on bracing cooperation

Geneva: The Minister of Labour H E Dr. Ali bin Samikh Al Marri, today met the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Gilbert F. Houngbo, in Geneva.

During the meeting, the progress made during the four years of the continuous technical cooperation program between the ILO and Qatar was reviewed.

The progress made during the program so far includes the adoption of new legislation and regulations related to the labour sector, as indicated in the latest ILO report issued earlier this week.

In a joint statement issued after the meeting, the two sides agreed to continue work in the areas of the labor sector, including occupational safety and health, and to support companies to review their policies and procedures in line with new legislation in the labour market.

This also includes areas of joint and continuous work to enhance international cooperation, exchange experiences, and develop effective and comprehensive policies for the labor market that contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the knowledge-based economy.


The minister affirmed the perpetuation of the joint technical cooperation between the Ministry of Labour and the International Labour Organization to underpin the labour sector in the country, stressing the sustainability of joint projects between both sides in the forthcoming years.

Dr Al Marri stressed that Qatar appreciates the joint efforts made through the distinguished partnership with ILO during the past four years, which appraised the reforms of the labour sector in Qatar.

The minister highlighted that Qatar is moving at a steady pace with labour sector reforms to achieve Qatar Vision 2030 and a commitment to building a modern and dynamic labour market.

Dr. Al Marri extended his best congratulations to Houngbo, on his election as ILO Director-General, and invited him, to visit Qatar during the coming period.

The recent labour reforms by Qatar have induced positive results,  the ILO Director-General stated, and thanked Dr. Al-Marri for his commitment to pursuing and implementing these reforms, in line with Qatar Vision 2030. 

Houngbo noted that ILO is ready to continue supporting Qatar, to achieve further improvements that benefit all workers.
