Siemens to play key role in Qatar’s sustainable development programme

DOHA: Siemens, an active partner of Qatar’s sustainable development ambitions, will play key role in the country’s commitment to combat the emission challenges.

The global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering is involved in a series of energy-efficient projects in Qatar as well as in the region.

Talking to The Peninsula yesterday, Joachim Kundt, Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategic Projects, said Siemens is actively involved in Qatar’s key upcoming projects, which are closely linked to the country’s commitment to slash the emission rate. The projects include, Tram service, sporting, building solutions and smart grids.. 

Siemens last year entered into a strategic partnership with Qatar Foundation, which focuses on the advancement of Qatar’s infrastructure capability and competence, including establishing an innovation center in Qatar Science and Technology Park (QSTP). Siemens has plans to double its workforce in Qatar over the next two years. “We are in partnership with Qatar Foundation. We invest massively in its innovation centre and actively involved in the energy consumption reduction”, Joachim said.

The tram project is in line with Qatar’s 2030 national vision to balance economic growth, social development and environmental protection. The Avenio trams Siemens will supply are designed to withstand climatic conditions in the Gulf state and to be equipped with the company’s state-of-the-art hybrid energy storage (HES) system. 

The percentage of reduction in energy consumption when utilizing Avenio trams, which have hybrid energy storage systems and can operate without an overhead contact line.  They are environmentally-friendly and produce less CO2 emissions than vehicles without such systems. 

Siemens created a customised Total Building Solution for the 200m high landmark Tornado Tower through power distribution and creating energy efficiency and flexibility.

Siemens Infrastructure & Cities supports Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kharamaa) by providing a turnkey Smart-Metering-Solution. With the help of Siemens’ Meter-Data-Management Software, large volumes of data can be picked out efficiently by Smart Meter and billing can be prepared easily. This will be realised in three districts of Doha by 2013, and Siemens will install 17,000 Smart Meters.
