Doha, Qatar: Old Doha Port successfully completed the third edition of its Seabed Cleaning Initiative, reaffirming its commitment to protecting Qatar’s marine environment and strengthening community engagement.
Since its launch in 2023, the initiative has become a central element of the port’s environmental programme and continues to contribute to the national agenda for sustainable development and environmental protection.
This year’s edition brought together certified divers, government partners, and private sector entities in a coordinated operation along Old Doha Port’s waterfront.
Divers removed accumulated waste from depths reaching up to 6 meters. Items collected included plastic materials, fishing lines, nets, and heavy debris that pose risks to marine life and safe navigation. The areas covered were identified through detailed seabed assessments conducted before the operation.
The initiative was supported by a wide range of partners. The Ministry of Municipality provided equipment and logistical backing, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change offered environmental oversight and guidance. ExxonMobil Qatar served as a strategic contributor.
CEO of Old Doha Port Engineer Mohamed Abdulla Al Mulla stated that the initiative reflects the port’s responsibility toward Qatar’s coastal environment. “Our marine environment is part of our national identity. Preserving it is a duty we all share.
“Our collaboration with Old Doha Port on the Seabed Cleaning Initiative reflects our shared responsibility in protecting the environment, preserving marine life, and advancing sustainability for generations to come.” said Rashid Al-Hajri, Vice President and Manager of Public and Government Affairs at ExxonMobil Qatar.
