DOHA: The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) has lined up workshops and lectures for all ages this winter, full schedule of which is available at the MIA Education Calendar online.
Running from January until March, courses are offered for families, children aged 3-18 years old and adults as well. All courses and workshops are designed by MIA staff and experts in their respective areas of Islamic art.
Courses are offered in the Education Center as well as a weekly drop-in workshop in the foyer on the main ground level of the museum.
“The Museum of Islamic Art is a place of safeguard for a world class collection of Islamic art. Through this exceptional collection, visitors to MIA of all ages can discover the great artistic achievements of the past and explore the diverse cultural heritage of Islamic civilisation through the ages,” said Deputy Director Education, Dr. Thalia Dorothy Kennedy.
Learning and interpretation at MIA takes place through a range of activities, including special art workshops, where children and adults can interact with the collection and create their own pieces in response.
One of the workshops, entitled “In the Jungle, the Mighty Jungle” is designed for preschoolers. Children explore MIA and find animals represented in the museum art object and create mixed media collages. This activity encourages observation and critical thinking – while being fun at the same time.
Another workshop, entitled “The Eye of the Beholder” is designed for teenagers who want to develop their artistic talent to prepare for visual art exams and create art portfolios while looking at and learning about the Islamic art in the museum.
For adults, the first lecture of the year is entitled “From Ibn Al Haytham to solar technology: standing on the shoulders of giants” by Dr Rabi Mohtar from Qatar Foundation. All courses are on a first-come first-served basis. For the full calendar, visit www.mia.org.qa
