DOHA: A criminal court yesterday sentenced three young Asian construction workers to death by firing squad for murdering an 82-year-old woman in her home.
The victim who lived alone in New Salata was stabbed to death by the men who broke into her house with the intention of robbery.
The incident took place in February 2012, according to earlier reports.
The victim’s house was adjacent to a construction site where the three men worked.
The woman used to provide them with meals at her house during the holy month of Ramadan.
Through their frequent visits to the house for food, they knew well about the premises, including the entrance and exit, said Al Sharq.
On the day of the incident, they entered the house at night.
All rooms were open except the one where the woman was sleeping.
They knocked her door that was locked from inside. The woman ranged the bell to alert her maid who was upstairs and moved with the help of a walking stick to open the door.
As soon as she opened the door, the men dragged her back into her room and stabbed her several times.
It was around 1am. They took a few items they found in the room, but failed to open the safe that contained money and jewellery, said the daily.
The maid came down but when she saw the men carrying knives, she ran back to her room and locked the door.
They chased her in an apparent bid to get rid of her. She locked the door and called the woman’s relatives for help who, in turn, alerted police.
The men ran way but were caught shortly, with the help of the maid. The Peninsula
