DOHA: Demand for communication specialists has increased within the growing media sector in Qatar, says an expert.
As many sectors in Qatar have started new institutions during the past years, the need for communication specialists is higher than before, said Dr Everette E Dennis (pictured), Dean and CEO of Northwestern University Qatar.
New institutions are coming up, for example, the cultural sector like museums need communication specialists, he told The Peninsula.
To meet these needs, the Northwestern University in Qatar has introduced some minors and would bring in some other new subjects in the near future. “To do a better job we assess the media in this region and other kind of issues that will help our students calibrate their work to the needs of the region.
“We keep adding new courses, expand courses in Middle Eastern studies and Middle Eastern media and we have strengthened our film offering,” he added.
Some of the minors to be introduced at the university would be taught in collaboration with other campuses within the Education City. Those minors are likely to be media and polices and health-related reporting.
“We are also building more links with other schools within the Education City and planning collaborative work with Georgetown University in Qatar. We will focus on media and politics, may be also look for opportunities with Hamad bin Khalifa University,” he said.
“We are in the process of developing several other minors which will be announced in the next few months with other universities,” he added.
Northwestern University in Qatar recently announced new appointments that add international talent to its administrative ranks, aimed at unifying and strengthening its programmes in journalism, communication and liberal arts.
The campus has a student population of 160, with 40 percent Qataris, and plans to increase the number of students to about 250, when it moves to a new building within the Education City.
“We want to maintain quality control,” Dr Dennis added.
