ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has so far imposed a total of Rs35m ($350,000) fines on different private television channels for airing obscene or excessive foreign content and illegal and misleading advertisements since July 2010.
The Pemra charged Rs1m fine from over 20 television channels during the last over three years. “Pemra took cognisance where violations of code of conduct of the authority were committed,” Minister for Information Senator Pervaiz Rashid in a written reply for a question in the National Assembly said yesterday.
He said the programming content being aired on private satellite TV channels is generally accordance with the prescribed code of conduct devised under Pemra Rules 2009 as well as social, cultural and religious values of the country.
Bomb in toy kills boy
PESHAWAR: A 10-year-old boy was killed and four others were wounded when an explosive apparently hidden inside a toy they were playing with detonated in northwestern Pakistan yesterday, police said.
The incident took place in Khaki, a suburb of Nowshera town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where many Afghan refugees are settled.
“Up to six children were playing with a toy that they had found from the garbage they collected from nearby areas when it exploded, killing the boy and wounding four other children,” senior local police official Khurram Rasheed said.
Another local police official, Saeed Ullah confirmed the incident, and said the boy who was killed in the blast was Afghan.
