MANILA: Of the seven senators who have filed their statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN), Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos is the richest with a declared net worth of nearly P437m.
The net worth of Senator Marcos, the only son and namesake of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, increased by P72.85m compared to his net worth in the year 2011.
He said the increase was the result of new rules set by the Civil Service Commission, which include the need to declare the acquisition costs of various properties, in the light of lessons learned during the impeachment trial of former chief justice Renato Corona.
The senator is so far the “richest” among the seven senators who have made public their SALNs after the April 30 deadline. Marcos’ net worth did not include the settlement of the estate of his late father.
Apart from Marcos, those who have revealed their SALNs for scrutiny by the media were senators Francis Escudero, Loren Legarda, Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr, Teofisto Guingona III, Sergio Osmena III and Antonio Trillanes IV.
Marcos explained in his SALN that he had to make certain adjustments to real investments even if the properties were under construction or the title deeds were not yet in his possession.
The senator’s assets included properties totalling P303.5m: P10m in cash and bank deposits; nine vehicles worth P16m; jewellery worth P15m; paintings valued at P16.7m; shares worth P20m and investment in a condominium unit at Wack-Wack in Mandaluyong and another unit in Ayala, Makati estimated at P85.6m.
The senator’s assets have increased significantly through the years. His net worth was P126.45m in 2007, P179.98m in 2008, P315.5m in 2009, P311.5m in 2010, and P364.39m in 2011.
Meanwhile, Guingona’s net worth went down by some P40m in 2012 compared to the previous year, apparently after the senator and his wife, Ma. Victoria, incurred liabilities through surety this year.
Revilla’s total assets was placed at P251,778,835.51 and his liabilities were pegged at P82,637,448.60, bringing his total net worth with actress-turned-politican wife, Cavite Representative Lani Mercado, to P169.141m.
