With the onset of summer, Aster Medical Centre initiated a month-long campaign to create awareness among people on protection from the hazards of the harsh weather.
The annual campaign “Beat the Heat” is a nationwide effort to educate the public, especially the workers, on the hazards of working outdoors under the scorching sun without adequate care.
Commenting on the launch of the campaign, Dr Sameer Moopen, CEO, DM Healthcare - Qatar said: “The harsh summers of Qatar pose a serious danger for the health of all those working outdoors. Through this campaign we aim to educate people on the right steps to prevent heat stress and to beat the summer heat”. The campaign is organized as part of the Aster Community Good Health Program.
The campaign kick-started last week with an informative session organised for employees of a construction company. Dr Joy Ellen Buela conducted a seminar for 50 people on heat stress and related illnesses.
“In the Middle East, summer temperatures can go as high as 50 degree Celsius. This increases the chances for severe heat related illness such as heat strokes, heat exhaustions, heat rash and heat cramps,” Dr Ellen said.
The Campaign intends to shed light on the symptoms of deadly heat strokes and urges people to adopt precautionary measures to stay hydrated.  ‘Beat the Heat’ campaign encourages everyone to wear light colored loose clothes, drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks from the sun, stand under shade and follow other medical advice given by the experts this summer.
