DOHA: Qatar University has launched a drive to educate people about the importance of vitamin D recommending exposure to the sun two to three times a week for five to 15 minutes to absorb enough quantity of the vitamin to the body.
The drive was launched by the Health Science Department at the Science and Arts Faculty of the Varsity, a local Arabic daily reported.
Deficiency of vitamin D is a matter of concern in all over the world including Qatar, a country known for immense sunshine, said Dr Ilham Al Sharif, Associate Professor of Qatar University and In-Charge of the Campaign.
She was addressing a seminar organised in Qatar University to create awareness among students and teachers about importance of vitamin D.
The required vitamin D could be gained through direct exposure to the sun for two to three times once in a week for five to 15 minutes and healthy diets as well.
Vitamin D strengthens the immune system of the human body and bones, she added.

I am suffering from severe deficiency of vitamin D, doctor advised me to expose to the sun, said a commentator. The problem is that direct exposure to the sun will cause burning the skin.
“I underwent medical checkup and was advised to take one capsule of vitamin D per week, but I think injection would be better because absorption will be quicker,” said another comentator.
“The level of vitamin D in my body was five and after treatment it rose to 20 then I stopped and it returned to five. Now I feel severe weakness,” another comment said.
