DOHA: The scheduled meeting of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) after the long summer break was put off for a week, from September 10 to 17, at the insistence of the members themselves, it is learnt. Most of the CMC members are still vacationing overseas with their families, with many of them having extended their stay for a week. Most of them are expected to be back by early next week when schools here re-open.

“What’s the big deal? It’s normal,” said a CMC member defending the decision of his colleagues to postpone the CMC meeting.

In remarks to this newspaper, Mohamed Al Shafi (pictured), who represents Al Rayan in the CMC, said of the postponement that it was only a matter of a few days.

Reminded that the law regulating the public representative body stipulates that it should re-convene in the first week of September so putting it off to the third week was a violation, Al Shafi argued that the legislation did not talk of any specific date.

“When a majority of the members are out of the country and in no position to attend the meeting it was natural to postpone it to a convenient date,” he said.
