DOHA: Widam Food Company, a Qatari public shareholding company, has launched a camel abattoir at Abu Nakhla Camel Market, as well as a mobile abattoir operating at the company’s sheep sales yard in the same area.
In a statement Wednesday, the company said the launch of the two abattoirs comes in line with its strategy to expand and enhance the quality of its services and products to meet consumers’ needs and aspirations, particularly amid the recent increase in demand for camel meat.
It said the opening of the camel abattoir represents an important addition to enhancing food security and self-sufficiency in camel meat in Qatar. In addition to serving local residents, it will meet the needs of the commercial sector and help satisfy daily local market demand for fresh camel meat.
For his part, CEO of Widam Food Company Ayedh Al Qahtani said the two abattoirs were equipped in accordance with the highest health and food safety standards to meet the needs of residents and the commercial sector.
He added that they would help accelerate slaughtering operations and fulfil daily orders, with a daily production capacity exceeding 100 camels at the camel abattoir and 200 sheep at the mobile abattoir.
Widam Food Company is the main supplier of live livestock and chilled and frozen meat to the local market. It also manages and operates the automated abattoir at Al Wakrah Central Market, in addition to managing several other local abattoirs.
