DOHA: Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) held a event recently in honour of Japan’s Itochu Corporation for its continued contribution and patronage.

The dinner, held at the HBKU Student Center, was attended by Sheikh Dr Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, President of HBKU, Kenjiro Monji, Ambassador of Japan, Shoichi Watanabe, Deputy Chief Executive for ME; General Manager of Doha Liaison Office, in addition to guests, faculty and staff from HBKU, and its partner universities.

Last year, Itochu signed an agreement in which it would provide $7.5m over five years to fund HBKU scholarship programmes. The contribution will be used to provide scholarships to students of HBKU and its partner universities over the coming five years.

Watanabe said at the event: “Without doubt, we believe by our contribution, this scholarship to Hamad bin Khalifa University will develop great future leaders who will play an important role for the further prosperity of this esteemed State of Qatar.”

Ameena Hussain, Director of HBKU Student Center said: “Hamad bin Khalifa University treasures our international partnerships — such as our relationship with Itochu, whose patronage will help provide 165 merit-based scholarships over five years, allowing us to ensure more students are able to achieve their dream of higher education and have a brighter future.”

At the reception, 13 students from HBKU partner universities were also recognized for their outstanding academic performance and achievements. These students were selected for the Itochu Scholarship programme for the 2013 – 2014 academic year.

This year’s scholarship recipients attend Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar), Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q), Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ), Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ), Georgetown University of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Q), and Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q).
