Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) carried out an urgent relief intervention in cooperation with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Yemeni Red Crescent to help people suffering due to the recent unrest in Yemen.
Under agreements signed with the two organisations, the QRC office in Sana’a provided food assistance to the needy in the city of Amran through the Yemeni Red Crescent branch there amid clashes that have displaced more than 10,000 families to other districts and governorates, with thousands more poor families still stuck inside the city and unable to flee due to high transportation costs and lack of means of living.
In response to this humanitarian crisis, QRC extended $60,000 funding to assist 700 poor families with urgent food items as soon as possible, as well as hygiene kits from UNICEF.
The food assistance consists of 25 kg rice, 25 kg sugar, 50 kg flour, a big box of beans cans, 10 litres of vegetable oil, a kilo of tea, five kilos of lentils, and a kilo of table salt. The UNICEF-provided hygiene kits contain a set of personal hygiene tools that meet international water and sanitation standards.
In a statement, QRC Secretary-General Saleh bin Ali Al Mohannadi said, “We are interested in standing by our brothers in Yemen who suffer from unemployment, lack of income, closure of most shops, and higher food prices due to the fighting.”
