DOHA: The first Qatar International Boat Show (QIBS) will feature the world premiere of a musical composition entitled Power by world renowned composer, conductor and pianist Dr Sophia Serghi (pictured).
“The QIBS-dedicated composition entitled Power is a musical metaphor of the powerful propulsion of a super yacht, combined with the human discovery of inner power and strength,’’ Dr Serghi explained
Power is believed to be the first piece of music for a string quartet to be commissioned by an international maritime event. It will be performed at a special VIP gala evening on November 13 by the Doha String Quartet which will be conducted by Dr Serghi herself.
The programme will also feature other original works by Dr Sophia Serghi and will be followed by a VIP reception and an evening of classical music.
Dr Serghi has composed stage, orchestral, chamber, vocal and multi-media works that have been performed globally. She holds a Doctorate in Music Composition and Theory from Columbia University in New York, and has been a Fulbright Scholar, a Mellon Fellow and a Cambridge University Faculty Fellow among others.
The Doha String Quartet features Nina Heidenreich, from Germany and Dmitri Torchinsky, from Russia, on violin; Romanian-born Andrea Mereutza, on viola; and Christoph Schmitz, from Venezuela, on the cello.
“We have engaged Dr Serghi, because the Show is all about unique experiences, worldwide firsts, international and regional launches and an event that combines luxury, industry know-how and culture.
The parallels between the International Boat Show and this new composition are obvious and we are all looking forward to making history while enjoying what will surely be a highly memorable evening,” said Anna-Denise Ioannou, Managing Director of QIBS.
QIBS promises to provide an industry-wide networking platform, generating solid opportunities for the promotion of new boats and services and creating a luxury market for affluent Middle Eastern and Asian buyers. QIBS will host events both on land and in the water, with around 100 international and local exhibitors attending, 150 boats on display, five global and regional launches and an estimated 15,000 visitors.
It will take place from November 12 to 16 at Lusail Marina, located within Lusail City.
